Specialties: Pets on film, complex production, asset mastery
Jon Michael Ryan is a director and cinematographer who began his filmmaking career by leaving med school. That scientist’s mind still comes in handy when tackling creative endeavors, while his foundation in cinematography guides his quest to tell the most arresting visual stories possible.
His commercial filmmaking career has taken him around the globe, creating content for SnackCrate, Nestlé Purina, Materne North America and Caterpillar. His work on “The Team that Wouldn’t Be Here” for Verizon – which consisted of a documentary, 12 short films, and eight commercials including two Super Bowl ads – was executive produced by Peter Berg and Film 45. That story of 11 NFL players and one NFL coach who wouldn’t be here without the first responders who saved them won three Cannes Lions, four Clios and more.
Jon has also served as series DP for shows on ESPN and Netflix. Executive produced by Ronda Rousey for Go90 and later appearing on ESPN+, “Why We Fight” followed boxer Zachary Wohlman as he fought his own demons on his path to building a professional boxing career. Season 1 of Netflix’s series “Fastest Car” explored the communities behind sleeper cars and supercars, then pitted them against each other in drag races.
Founded in 2008, Retriever (formerly known as Tangent Mind) has been Jon’s producing and directing shingle for the bulk of his career. Once an exclusively commercial production company, Retriever now boasts a slate of originals. Jon executive produces all Retriever productions.
